Web Content Writing - Characteristics of Good Website Content?

Saturday, July 21, 2007

While doing my last post about How to get Free backlinks, I thought of writing something on what is "good content" because it is often a question to many. Most of us are almost bored with the cliché saying "Content is King" and for obvious reasons everyone wants to have the King on his side.

It has been said time and again that a "good content" for web is one that is meant for users and not for the search engines. While I agree to this statement whole heartedly, I also believe that even on the web, depending on the purpose of use, content should take its form and structure.

If we take an analytical approach towards the various type of web content, we can probably classify them into few major groups.
a) Content for general business websites
b) Content that is specifically meant for distribution as free website content.
c) Blogs

This is just a broad classification that makes me work out an easy way to determine the type of content I want to produce for a website, however, this can be further broken down into sub categories and I am sure there will be many people on the web who might not even like this categorization of web content.

Now, for all these different types of web content, the requirement is very different and the content needs to be structured keeping these in mind. but the common factor always remains the same - develope your website content for your VISITORS.

a) Content for General Business Websites: For this type of websites the content needs to provide enough information about the business, its products / services and at the same time have the pitch to sale its product / service or whatever their conversion goal might be. Here there is no harm even if you are putting up a direct sales pitch. However, it should be kept in mind, that if your site content is all about the sales pitch people would probably not make a purchase from you. If you can provide useful information about your products/services that are not directly related to the sales pitch but would actually educate your prospective customers about the usage, maintenance and various other aspects of your product/service that would help to establish an authority status for your website and people would have more confidence to make purchases from you. Also, this type of informative web site content works as ideal weapon to get some Free backlinks.

Though website content should always be for the human visitors, these business websites can not really ignore the search engines, as they are the major traffic drivers. So it is also important to optimize the content for the search engines with proper keywords. But, you should be careful not to mar the readability of the content with excessive use of keywords ( keyword stuffing ).

b) Content For Distribution as free Website Content: While creating this type of content, always remember, no one wants to read your advertisement. If you really want to get some link love by distributing free content, write something USEFUL. Yes, that is the key to write good free website content for distribution purpose. Make your articles informative, useful and detailed. Try to add some unique information. If you know your domain well enough this should not be a problem at all. Also, if you can add a tinge of humor that would just be fantastic.

For most of these articles, it is advisable that you also write a summary, so that it is easier for anyone to understand your article and decide to publish it on their website, even without having to go through the whole article. Try to make this summary and the Title of the article as interesting as possible because this is what is going to sale your article to the people looking for free website content.

c) Blogs: Probably the most important source of website content in today's perspective. While it is extremely difficult to add particular characteristics to content for blogs ( because of their varied nature and purpose) it has often bee observed that blog content that are written with a personal touch and in a communicative style so as to engage the users is often the most favored option. In addition, the more useful and unique your blog content is the better it is.

Some General Characteristics of Good Website Content
  • Write your website content with human visitors in mind - not the search engines.
  • Use proper grammar and spellings. (keep your target audience in mind, spellings are very different In UK and US English standards )
  • Provide useful information
  • Unique content ( borrow concepts but do not steal content ;) )
  • Write in easy to understand language
  • Make your titles interesting - Try to have your keyword in your title
  • Break down entire content into smaller paragraphs.
  • Try to put your main points in bulleted lists - it helps your readers!
  • Add keywords in your content wherever applicable - BUT do not overdo!
  • Use call to actions wherever applicable.

While I am not really anywhere close to being an expert in web content writing, with my years of experience I have seen these points to be very effective in improving the overall quality of a website. I am sure there might be loads of other factors that also contributes to good web content. Feel free to put your inputs in the comments.

Free Back Links ! - How to Get Links for Free?

Wednesday, July 18, 2007

Yes! Back links are still one of the most coveted items for webmasters who are into SEO and there are good reasons for it. Besides Google's urdent effort to crush down on link sales, buying links is often not a feasible option for small webmasters.Under such situation most webmasters would often resort to link exchange or spamming blog and guest books. But they are to no good ! So what other ways can a website get back links and that too for free?

There are actually more than one ways to get good quality free back links to your website.

a) Directory Submission : Submit your website to good quality directories. There are plenty of directories that are free yet useful. Try to make a list of them and submit to them in accordance to their T & C. Most directories would approve your listin if you follow their guidelines properly and you end up with a bunch of good free backlinks. To check for a good quality directory, remeber the following:
  1. A good directory would never ask for a link back
  2. Try to find how old the directory is -- the older the better
  3. Check the number of sites already submitted - the more the number of sites the better it is
  4. Check if the site links to websites that are potetial bad neighborhoods.

b) Blog & Social Media: Create a blog of your own. Believe me it is far better than spamming other's blogs :D In almost all SEO related websites it i preached that content is the key to success because search engines love content and good contents gain links. What better way would you have to present your good content to potential linkers than postin it in your blog? It is important that you create a blog as a part of your domain, i.e, if your domain is http://www.example.com/, you can have a blog as http://www.example.com/blog . This helps to transfer the power of the free back links that you get in your blog to the main domain also.

Create good content on your blog and submit them to the social media websites like Digg, Del.icio.us, Reddit etc. If your content is really good, you are sure to get a host of Free back links. ( this reminds me, probably I should make my next post on what is "Good content").

c)RSS Feeds: Generate a RSS feed and submit it to the RSS directories. On the Internet people are hungry for content, there might be a bunch of people waiting to put your RSS on their website and thus provide you with a bunch of free backlinks.

d) Article Marketing: Write short articles about your product / service / industry and submit it to the various article directories. These article directories would allow you to put your link in the article or in the author's byline. The best part is in most of these cases you can link back to your site with your choice of anchor text and again its all for free :)

e) Press Release: We all know what press releases are meant for but an advantage that we should not overlook is that a press release would always contain a link back to the website. So a well circulated press release is equals to a bunch of Free back links.

f) Website Review: There are various websites and forums that conducts review of website/product/services. Submit your website to these and with each review you are sure to get atleast one free back link. ( Drawback: if your product/service quality is bad you might get some negative review which in turn can affect your business)

g)Freebies: For those webmasters who can afford or are technically very strong; offer free widgets, templates and other freebies that people can use on their website and blogs and ask them for a link in return. Most of them would happily link back to your website for a good free wordpress template or a fancy widget.

Do you still need more ways to get free backlinks ? Check This ;)

New Firefox Extention for Google - A New Tool for SEO !

Sunday, July 15, 2007

Dave Davis of Red Fly Marketing has come up with a new Firefox extention, "Google Global". Once installed, it allows you to search country specific Google domains (.com,.co.uk, .ie, .ca etc ) from the same browser without making any changes to the URL manually. All you need to do is , after you have initiated the search, just right click on your mouse anywhere on the search results page and select the country of your choice from the Google Global option. It is definitely going to be helpful for SEO to check search ranks in Google in different countries.

Also, I guess, in case you are running any Adwords campaign targeted at any other country, you might be able to check your ads display by runing that country specific Gogle version using this tool.
