Wal-Mart To Offer Search Marketing

Monday, December 31, 2007

Wal-Mart's decision to offer businesses search marketing services is a good sign that internet marketing is now fully in the small business mainstream. I'm not as skeptical as many SEO's who have commented online, suggesting Wal-Mart can't do SEO and SEM well. Quality search marketing is mostly a function of basic technical knowledge, basic principles of search, common sense, and quality analytics which Google now provides at no charge. Most SEO and SEM functions can be taught and outsourced, though it will be interesting to see how Wal Mart approaches the education of the thousands of specialists they could need to meet demand for these services.

Although it's extremely unlikely that any big players will switch from internal projects or even outsourced high-end firms, this entry by Wal-Mart could threaten the huge number of mom and pop SEO/SEM shops by scooping up business that would otherwise go to them, especially if there are any Wal-Mart special deals with Google, Yahoo, and MSN to provide Pay Per Click or other forms of advertising at discounted rates. Also, if there is a money back guarantee it could cinch a lot of small businesses away from local "experts", many of whom have very questionable SEO and SEM skills anyway.

So, would you trust Wal-Mart to provide your small business SEM?

Pay for Everything but SEO is for Free ?

Sunday, December 30, 2007

Last night I received an email from a person with a business proposition. He is appreantly a middleman who have got a client who has around 400 domains and he wants to monetize them. This gentleman wanted me to take up the project for a 50% revenue share of what he would get which is approx $2000. Working on 400 domains for $2000 ??? Well, there is more to it.... the funny/sad part follows this...

He wanted me to send him
a) The BEST SEO-Experts Portfolio
b) One 3 page real-life advise with specific examples on how to make money from Adsense
c) Few of your great innovative ideas on how to make money in Internet

I wasn't sure if he is oversmart or is he a newbie who is not sure of what he is asking for . I sent him a mail as below...
============
I got a feel of the job however, I didn't get the exact requirements/deliverables for the job from my end. Can you please explain exactly what are the things you will need me to do ?
For detailed discussion you can also call me at 09963111179

===========

And his reply was just a one liner

=============
Kindly follow the first e-mail. Details will be provided after getting the proper response.
=============

So, someone with whom I am speaking for the first time expects me to send

b) One 3 page real-life advise with specific examples on how to make money from Adsense
c) Few of your great innovative ideas on how to make money in Internet

FREE OF COST.... without even knowing the project or the person. Am I a fool or am I dying for a job ?

Also on a few minutes chat on Gtalk he asked for the same information and when I informed I provide these services only for a payment he told me there are 1000s of SEOs in India who do this for free and that was the end of it. I asked him to find one that is gullible to this offer and excuse me.

This guy would probably not ask a tax consultant or a lawyer or a doctor to provide free advice for a week before he is satisfied and starts paying him for his advices in future, would he ?

If people can pay for all other professional services why would they have to make such ridiculous demands when they need service from some Internet marketing professional ?

This reminds me a of a similar post that I read a few months back at Lee's Blog

When will people understand that Internet marketing is a specialised services and SEO / SEM professionals are actually "PROFESSIONALS" and the services we provide do require payment ??

Ask.com Launches AskEraser to Address Privacy Issues

Tuesday, December 11, 2007

Ask.com has introduced AskEraser today giving searchers the ability to search anonymously. Ask announced this feature in July and now it is finally aailable for all users.

When a searcher activates the AskEraser, Ask will stop recording the searchers queries and cookie information. This includes the users IP address, user id, session id and the search query. Ask Eraser facility is available across several Ask.com seach facilities including, images search, video search, blog search, Ask city, Maps and Directions besides the normal websearch on Ask.com

To activate this facility you will need to click the link for AskEraser on the top right of the screen which will ask for your confirmation and once you agree the feature is turned on. To put it off you will need to follow the same process.

Also, as Ask has been using the user's search data in their algorithm, with this new feature in place it is to be seen whether the relevancy of Ask's results get affected.

On the other hand it is also to be seen how the other search engine giants address the increasing concern on user's privacy, especially, now that Ask has already taken the first step to address that.

Ready for Holiday Season !

Monday, December 10, 2007

Variety is the spice of life and as the festive season approaches we try to break free from the everyday life and do something different - SEO Kolkata blog is no exception. I just thought to spice up my blog and induce the festive mood in my readers with this new design.

I was planning to create a skin myself, however, after seeing this design at http://www.pannasmontata-templates.net/, I didn't feel like reinventing the wheel. Let me know if you like this and also if you find any bugs.

Google Integrates AIM into Gmail

Thursday, December 06, 2007

Google has integrated AOL's popular instant messaging service, AIM, into Gmail. The new feature will enable users access their AIM account on their Gmail Web page. Users can also have instant message conversations with their AIM buddies on Gmail.

They need to simply click on the upside-down triangle next to "set status here" in Gmail chat, and select "Sign into AIM" from the drop down menu.

Once AIM log-in information is entered, AIM contacts would appear intermingled with Gmail contacts, and the user can select an AIM contact and start chatting directly.

As of now, only the English version of the new feature is being rolled-out. But soon, AIM access will be made available in other language versions as well.

While AIM is AOL's most valuable service dominating instant messaging in the US, Google's instant messaging 'Google Talk', which was integrated into Gmail in February last year, has failed to make a mark as yet.

13 Ways to Power Search Using Google

Tuesday, December 04, 2007

Here are some tips on power searching using Google.

1. Explicit Phrase: Lets say you are looking for content about internet marketing. Instead of just typing search engine optimization into the Google search box, you will likely be better off searching explicitly for the phrase. To do this, simply enclose the search phrase within double quotes.Example: "search engine optimization"

2. Exclude Words: Lets say you want to search for content about internet marketing, but you want to exclude any results that contain the term package. To do this, simply use the “-“ sign in front of the word you want to exclude.Example: search engine optimization - package

3. Site Specific Search: Often, you want to search a specific website for content that matches a certain key phrase. Even if the site doesn’t support a built-in search feature, you can use Google to search the site for your term. Simply use the “site:somesite.com” modifier.Example: Google rankings site:http://seo-kolkata.blogspot.com

4. Similar Words and Synonyms: Let’s say you want to include a word in your search, but want to include results that contain similar words or synonyms. To do this, use the “~” in front of the word.Example: “internet marketing” ~professional

5. Specific Document Types: If you’re looking to find results that are of a specific type, you can use the modifier “filetype:”. For example, you might want to find only PowerPoint presentations related to internet marketing.Example: "SEO” filetype:ppt

6. This OR That: By default, when you do a search, Google will include all the terms specified in the search. If you are looking for any one of one or more terms to match, then you can use the OR operator. (Note: The OR has to be capitalized).Example: seo OR Internet Marketing

7. Phone Listing: Let’s say someone calls you on your mobile number and you don’t know how it is. If all you have is a phone number, you can look it up on Google using the phonebook feature.Example: phonebook:617-555-1212 (note: the provided number does not work – you’ll have to use a real number to get any results).

8. Area Code Lookup: If all you need to do is to look-up the area code for a phone number, just enter the 3-digit area code and Google will tell you where it’s from.Example: 617

9. Numeric Ranges: This is a rarely used, but highly useful tip. Let’s say you want to find results that contain any of a range of numbers. You can do this by using the X..Y modifier (in case this is hard to read, what’s between the X and Y are two periods. This type of search is useful for years (as shown below), prices or anywhere where you want to provide a series of numbers.Example: president 1940..1950

10. Stock (Ticker Symbol): Just enter a valid ticker symbol as your search term and Google will give you the current financials and a quick thumb-nail chart for the stock.Example: GOOG

11. Calculator: The next time you need to do a quick calculation, instead of bringing up the Calculator applet, you can just type your expression in to Google.Example: 48512 * 1.02

12. Word Definitions: If you need to quickly look up the definition of a word or phrase, simply use the “define:” command.Example: define:consultant

13. Searching for URLs containing certain words. Use the "inurl:word" modifier.Example site:seo-kolkata.blogspot.com inurl:content

If you find it too difficult to remember all these you can also use the advanced search option in Google that will allow you to use most of these through an easy user interface.
