Wall Street Journal: Yahoo and Google May Become Search Bedfellows

Saturday, April 19, 2008

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Yahoo and Google are closer than ever to a deal where Yahoo would outsource their search monetization to Google. Google continues to do a much better job of producing revenue from searches - some estimates suggest that Google gets more than twice Yahoo's revenue per search click.

Yahoo also is continuing to negotiate with AOL as part of Yahoo's efforts to stave off a takeover by Microsoft.

The Journal suggests that Yahoo's April 22 earnings report may play a key role in the Microsoft takeover argument. If Yahoo comes in with strong earnings it will strengthen the idea that the Microsoft bid is too low, but if earnings are weak it will support Microsoft's efforts to force a Yahoo merger against the will of the current Yahoo board.

A Look at UK Search Marketing Companies

Wednesday, April 16, 2008

While the demand for experienced search marketing professionals and reliable search engine optimization companies are increasing everyday, the mushrooming of so called Internet marketing companies have also increased exponentially. As a large segment of my clients ( for whom I work as a Consultant) are from UK I was doing some study on the various search marketing options available to the UK audience. Besides, freelance consultants like me, there are quiet a few firms in the market. I was pretty impressed by the Vertical Leap website and the service range they provide.

While most companies have their forte in one or the other segment of various internet marketing options, Vertical Leap seems to cover complete search marketing services ( SEO, PPC as well as Local Search). The reason I found them different is because they have even considered local search as a serious business offering and are helping clients leverage the same. Some of their blog posts revealed that they are working on utilizing universal search as well.Definitely an ideal approach to survive the changing dynamics of the search marketing world.

With their operations in USA and Australia , besides UK vertical Leap seems to be a major player in the search engine optimisation market in UK.

Google Sued for Disturbing Privacy of a Couple

Sunday, April 06, 2008

A couple staying in Pennsylvania has sued Google over invading their privacy. The couple claims that Google has disturbed their privacy by showing pictures of their home on the ‘Street View’ website.

According to Aaron and Christine Boring’s lawyer, Google entered their private driveway for taking images for its site. The driveway lets one see street-level views of cities from a map.

The lawsuit was filed on April 2 in Allegheny County Common Pleas Court.

The 10 pages long lawsuit states that Boring had bought their home at Franklin Park, a Pittsburgh suburb, in October 2006. Privacy was their major concern behind buying this home.

Reacting to the whole issue Google spokesman Larry Yu said, “It is unfortunate litigation was chosen to address the concern because we have visible tools, such as a YouTube video, to help people learn about imagery removal and an easy-to-use process to facilitate image removal.”

Yu further added that keeping in mind people’s feelings, Google contains links on the website requesting the removal of particular images.

However, the couple was unavailable to speak to the media regarding the issue.

Google to Sell Off DoubleClick's Search Marketing Unit - Performics

Saturday, April 05, 2008

Search giant Google has announced plans to sell off the Performics, the search engine marketing division of DoubleClick as part if its integration strategy.

Google purchased DoubleClick last month for $3.1 billion and has now received regulatory approval for the acquisition.

DoubleClick consists of two divisions; an affiliate marketing company and a search engine marketing business which provides advertising and SEO services.

In a statement Google said the latter, called Performics, was to be sold off in order to avoid a conflict of interest and allow the search engine to maintain its objectivity in both search and advertising.

"It's clear to us that we do not want to be in the search engine marketing business," said Tom Phillips, Google's director of DoubleClick integration.

He confirmed that the search engine had received "preliminary interest" in the Performics division from a number of its existing partners.

Meanwhile there are reports that Google may be in talks with eBay to buy the VoIP service Skype or enter into a joint ownership agreement with the online auction site.
